Approach

Our Approach

Broadline Capital's preference is to invest in the last equity round prior to a company's first exit opportunity. Our proprietary approach is designed to stretch alpha at every link of the investment value chain. We seeks diversification across a range of sectors, geographies, structures, and market caps. When selecting opportunities, we take a two-pronged approach:

First, we start with a "top-down" view across the horizon within our six core thematic categories to identify niche categories where there exist abundant opportunities characterized by a large addressable market, strong margins, rapid growth, market fragmentation with consolidation potential, and a plentiful supply of acquisitive corporate acquirers who are potential exit partners.

Next, we take a "bottom-up" view to selectively collaborate within these selected areas with like-minded management teams who are making traction in developing a rising category leader or category creator that is nearing an expected liquidity event or significant valuation milestone, such as an IPO or M&A event.

Thematic Focus Areas

Core Technologies. We've been leading investments in the AI category for nearly 20 years. We're actively seeking the next generation of AI-enabled solutions to address the widespread demand for automation, improved decision engines, and solutions that transform decision speed, efficiency, accuracy, precision, data security, and access to unique data sources. Our core tech team is led by the founder and former leader of Apple's semiconductor design organization who also led Apple's iPhone engineering design team. Prior to that, he co-authored the Java language while a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems. We believe the democratization of expertise and access to data enabled by Ai-driven technologies will have the potential to create much greater impact on humanity than the industrial revolution.

Financial Services. We place emphasis on unlocking value-added financial services and digital solutions that enable smarter, faster, more convenient, and more accessible offerings. Our financial services transaction leaders have decades of leadership experience in the industry, having served in the past as BlackRock's former Co-Chief Investment Officer of fixed income and leadership roles within McKinsey's Financial Institutions Group. We believe Digital Finance as an asset class is still in its infancy, and the best opportunities to invest in the future shapers of this category are still ahead, including opportunities for new financial products enabled by the tokenization of real-world assets, and new opportunities enabled by financial inclusion across the Global South.

Agritech & Food Systems. We're inspired to back the rising category creators whose innovations will help transform the food ecosystem and help to end global malnutrition by upgrading production quality, supply chain resilience, cold storage efficiencies, source traceability, ingredient transparency, and food security. We believe some of the best medicine to treat illness is access to healthy nutrition that helps prevent, manage, and treat illness. According to research referenced by American Society for Nutrition, one of five deaths across the globe is attributable to suboptimal diet, more than any other risk factor including tobacco. Our Agritech team is led by serial entrepreneurs who bring a vest network of relationships and more than 25 years of pragmatic operating experience in regenerative farming, foodservice, and consumer packaged goods.

Health & Life Sciences. We back later-stage innovators who are advancing novel therapeutic platforms, AI-enabled synthetic biologics, and less-invasive devices to improve patient outcomes and help realize the promise of precision medicine. We seek to support the pathways toward reducing infant mortality and reaching human potential not just to extend life-span but to increase health-span. Led by the former head of clinical pharmacology at two of the world's pharma giants, our life science team brings more than 50 years of domain experience and expertise.

Energy, Transportation & Data Infrastructure. We seek to back innovators whose solutions enable total cost of ownership savings and energy efficiency gains through Smarter Data Centers, next-gen Energy Storage, as well as Safer, Smarter, and More Energy-Efficient Logistics and Warehousing. Our team in this category is led by a serial entrepreneur and recognized domain expert whose numerous issued patents and peer-reviewed articles is matched by their track record as a serial entrepreneur.

Sports, Media & Entertainment. We believe sports, media and entertainment ("SME") will become increasingly important in shaping a future where music, entertainment, and sports diplomacy can help bring people together, play a role in promoting mutual understanding, and increase joy in the human experience. The SME industry continues to witness exponential and dynamic growth. Top-tier sports properties and music catalogs enjoy global appeal across virtually every demographic. Led by the former president and general manager of two NBA teams and an NFL team, our team leader for this category brings deep pragmatic experience and a vast relationship network built over 45 years.

Broadline's team is comprised of faculty members from several of the world's leading research institutions including Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, Wharton, The Ohio State University, University of California - San Diego, and University of Texas - Dallas. They had past careers as executives at industry-leading companies including Allergan/Abvie, Apple, BlackRock, Boston Consulting Group, Brunswick, General Electric, McKinsey & Company, Morgan Stanley, Oppenheimer, PwC, and Pfizer. They collectively hold approximately 50 academic degrees including 25 doctorates and other advanced degrees.
